The above rule is simple and easy to remember when you have a topic, but what if you have two or more topics? Rule-4- Subject + Apposition and the verb:- In the apposition sentences, the verb will correspond to the first subject. Ex-M. Narendra Modi, India`s .M arrives tomorrow. I, D.Singh, am a teacher. The expression « more than one » takes on a singular verb. Oil and gas are a popular heating choice. Peanut butter combined with bread and jelly is a delicious snack. (Here, peanut butter, bread and jelly are a unit, a sandwich, so no comma is needed and we keep the singular verb.) With agreement, we refer to the set of rules that govern the relations between the different parts of the discourse. In the case of the subject and the verb, the rules in English may differ from those in your native language.
Therefore, it is not a good idea to limit yourself to translation. It is clear that the basic rules establish the verb in the singular for a singular subject and the verb in the plural for a plural subject. Rule-16- Sub + and + Sub and the verb:-(a) If two subjects indicate two people, then the verb will be plural. Ex- The principal and the teacher of the class leave. (b) If two subjects specify only one person, then the verb in the singular becomes number. Ex- The poet and philosopher arrives. (c) If two subjects depend on each other, then the verb will be in the singular. Pen and paper are essential for writing. (d) If in sentences everyone, everyone, comes no, then the verb will be in the singular.
Ex- Every boy and girl is present. (e) In the phrases « and not », the verb will be before and according to the subject. Ex- you and not he are responsible for it. In the space of a year, $5 million was spent on building a new plant, and millions more was spent on training future factory workers. (« $5 million » is a certain amount. Therefore, the verb is singular.) Every year, funds are made available to support medical research. (« Fund » is a vague term rather than a certain amount. Therefore, the verb is plural.) If you`re not sure what a plural verb looks like, you should know that many verbs in the singular end in s, while the plural form of the verb doesn`t, just like run/runs above. (However, this does not apply to tricky verbs).) Selecting verbs that match first- and second-person subjects is usually not a big problem, but a peculiarity of third-person singular verbs causes some confusion among some students, especially ESL students, when working with third-person singular subjects. Ex- Many men are present at the meeting. Many are absent from there. b) « More than one » will be together in singular number, but separated are in plural number. Ex- More than a boy is there. There are more boys than one. Rule-12- Certain indefinite number and the verb:-With a certain number, the verb will be after the first subject and with an indefinite numerical verb after the second subject. Ex- One of the boys reads. Some of the guys play. Rule-7- Here, there and the verb:- Here and there the sentence verb after the subject will be after the verb. Ex- There is a book on the table. There are books on the table. Matching the subject and verb in English can seem quite simple.
